We as Americans are a people who love our freedom. Since the founding of the nation, people from around the world have come here in search of life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness. And freedom is a wonderful gift and virtue.
It can also be a dangerous trap.
Paul tells us that our greatest freedom has little to do with our national identity, but with our identity as God's children. Then he warns us not to let that liberty, that freedom, lead us into bondage:
"Freedom is what we have- Christ has set us free! Stand, then, as free people, and do not allow yourselves to become slaves again. As for you, my friends, you were called to be free. But do not let this freedom become an excuse for letting your physical desires control you. Instead, let love make you serve one another." Galatians 5:1, 13
Paul says, we are free people. And the proof of it is when we, motivated by love, submit to and serve one another.
As strange as it may sound, we are freest when we are surrendered to Christ, and most enslaved when we ignore him to do what we want. Jesus himself said, "If the Son sets you free, then you will be really free." (John 8:36)
As we celebrate our national freedom this year, please remember that true freedom comes from God. Let him make you free indeed!
